Brushing doesn&#8217;t do the trick. What would work? They imagine other solutions \u2013 visiting a birdbath or a car wash . . . and then &#8211; A-HA! \u2013 the winner: a trip to the beauty parlor where hijinks ensue. In the end, freshly coiffed and very fancy, the dolls finally sit down to enjoy their tea party.<\/p>\n<p><em>From the author: In 2008, I was photographing old dolls using a\u00a0<em>medium-format\u00a0camera. The dolls all had such soulful eyes, I was<\/em>\u00a0<em>certain that\u00a0they were trying to tell me their stories. I began<\/em>\u00a0<em>prowling\u00a0secondhand stores and stoop sales, collecting all kinds of dolls<\/em>\u00a0<em>to photograph. The more expressive, the better; I particularly loved the ones that were no longer pristine, the ones that had been drawn on, or had their hair cut, or wore<\/em>\u00a0<em>mismatched or handmade clothes. Growing up, I loved Dare Wright books, so I decided to<\/em>\u00a0<em>re-interpret those photographic children\u2019s books for today\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0<em>new readers.\u00a0<\/em><\/em>Messy\u00a0Hair<em><em>\u00a0is the first of several photo-driven books<\/em>\u00a0<em>to come.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sockmonkeypress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GG-author-photo-sm.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-455\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-455\" src=\"https:\/\/sockmonkeypress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GG-author-photo-sm-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"GG-author-photo-sm\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sockmonkeypress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GG-author-photo-sm-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/sockmonkeypress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GG-author-photo-sm.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Gretchen Grace, an\u00a0artist and designer with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, was an Art Director for the Children\u2019s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop).
